Kiss In Front Of ChurchLet me start by saying that I don’t claim in any way to be an expert in managing stress. It seems like even when I’ve managed to neutralize some stressful situations, there are plenty other scenarios that still manage to stress me out. I’m only hoping to communicate a couple things that may help you avoid some of the stress I have gone through.

Stress is not always bad
Hear me out on this one. It’s not that stress is ever desirable, but it can lead to some important changes. For example, say you’ve got no time for editing sessions because people are booking sessions from sun-up to sun-down. You’re feeling overwhelmed because you don’t have time for all the other studio tasks. That may be a good signal that you’re under-pricing your sessions. Also, if you manage to find your way out of a stressful problem, others may be interested in reading about your solution. You may have found a good topic to present at a photographer’s conference, to write a book about, or to make a DVD on. Your solution may have come at the price of a lot of stress, but it could end up producing some extra income for you.

Don’t be naive
I’m fairly certain that there will never come a time when you’ll be running your photography studio stress-free. I think all of us want to run our businesses with reduced stress, but there will never come a time in your life where only good things happen. I’m probably the one that needs to hear this more than you guys do, but try to enjoy life even when it’s not stress-free.

Get a fresh perspective
Sometimes we make a big deal out of something that’s really not that important. Asking friends for their perspective on an issue might get you mental clarity to see your “problem” as a non-issue or at least as less of a tragedy. Taking some time to think about something other than stressful situations can also help you be a better problem solver. You might even come up with a creative solution when you get a full night’s rest.

Definitely. All about having the right perspective. I think of it kind of like a check engine light. When there’s stress, it’s time to pull over and fix the problem.
